If I Lose Weight, Will My Boobs Get Smaller?

By  |

My breasts seem to change in size seemingly as often as the change in seasons. Some months my boobs will be big and perky, and the next month, they hardly fill the cups of my bra. While it’s been said that hormones, caffeine, and even carb intake can change the size of your breasts throughout a given month, one thing I always thought might be playing a role in my ever-changing bra size is how much my weight changes.

Dr. Kristamarie Collman, a board-certified family medicine physician, says that losing weight can indeed affect your boob size. “The true answer is yes. Losing weight can affect your boob size because the majority of the breasts are composed of fatty tissue,” Collman says. “However, women store fat in different places, such as our abdominal area and thighs. When fat is lost, it does not have a preference for a particular area.”

While many of us wish we could wave a magic wand over our bodies and decide which areas we’d like to see fat disappear from, it’s just not possible. What we can do is tone certain parts that we want to strengthen so that if weight is lost in that area, it’s replaced by muscle instead.

Esther Avant, a certified personal trainer, suggests diving into specific exercises that help strengthen and tone the chest. “It can be frustrating to notice that your boobs are shrinking as you’re losing weight,” Avant says. “Targeted exercises like push-ups, chest presses with dumbbells or a barbell, and chest flies with dumbbells or cables are all beneficial at building muscle in that area.”
