Should you exercise before breakfast to lose weight?

Should you grab a snack first or is it better to exercise before breakfast to lose weight?

According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, exercising before breakfast may help you consume fewer calories throughout the day’.

For the study, 12 physically active men were divided into two groups:

  • One group was given oatmeal and orange juice for breakfast before a workout
  • The other second group was not given any breakfast before a workout

Both groups were asked to run on the treadmill for a duration of one hour. They were all given food to take with them and were instructed to eat as much as they wanted for the rest of the day. The researchers measured the amount of food left over.

The same procedure was carried out in the second week of the experiment, however, this time both the groups were switched.

Results of the study

The study showed that the group who consumed breakfast before their workout consumed many more calories overall.

“The participants consumed an average of 4 500 calories on days when they ate breakfast before exercising, but an average of only 3 600 calories on days when they fasted before exercising,” explained lead study author Jessica Bachman, an assistant professor of exercise science at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.

It is important to note that further research may be needed to be undertaken to confirm these findings since the study involved a small and specific group of participants. However, if you can work out on an empty stomach in the morning, it could you reach your weight goals.

Whether your body requires a little boost of energy before your workout or not, do what works for you. Before making any changes to your diet and exercise programme, it may be a good idea to seek advice from your doctor first, especially if you suffer from any medical conditions or are on medication.
